Cosmic Ray Research Program
Edward Ney (1920-1996) was a University of Minnesota physics professor from 1947-1990. In 1947 he started a cosmic ray research program that focused on high-altitude studies using Skyhook balloons. He later established the Minnesota Balloon Project to improve the performance of high-altitude balloons and carry out experimental upper atmospheric studies. Much of Ney's balloon research was conducted over the years at the Anoka County Airport in Blaine.
